We create our designs with colored porcelain clay. We use an old Japanese porcess called Nerikomi. We mix our own clay, add colorants to it and designs are created by layerinig the porcelain in various ways whail buiding the patterns into large loaf or log. Each piece of jewelry is sliced from the block and carefully shaped, sanded and wiped clean with a damp cloth. It is then bisque fired in a high fire electric kiln followed by a glaze firing to cone 6. ( 2300 degrees F) A third and final firing of 24 karat gold luster is applied to the edge of each piece. No paints, colored glazes or underglazes are used. All the rich depth of color in the designs comes from the colored porcelain alone.
We create our designs using our imaginations aided by observing nature and it's color schemes. We use a computer that employs a drawing program where we can work with the designs before they are created in the studio. It has become a great designing tool.
